Tips For Getting Out of Your Own Head

Hi ,

There are very few certainties in life, but one of them is that if you’re the type of person who’s hard on yourself, has high expectations, and wants to make a difference yet often overthinks things; you’ve also likely had periods where it feels like you’re stagnating somehow.

I know this because of course I’ve been there too. And while I’d love to give you some high-minded advice or a Rocky’esque speech to help you coordinate this, what will benefit you most is simply a dose of the truth.

You’re not special, it’s normal and regardless of what drives you, it will never go away.

Nope, never. But you WILL get better at managing it, and it’s in that spirit that I’ve shared some more tips below to get you out of your funk and regain the perspective you need to move forward.

Build a “Reality Check Network”

Identify 2-3 people who will tell you the truth about your progress without sugarcoating or dismissing your concerns. External perspective is invaluable; again, just make sure you aren’t creating an echo chamber.

Run “Failure Simulations”

Imagine your worst-case scenario, then work backward to see how survivable it actually is. What you think is a feeling of stagnation is often simply a fear of failure or a sense of inadequacy in disguise.

Remember Perfectionism is Self-Handicapping

Start letting some areas of life be “good enough” so you can excel where it truly matters. You can’t be exceptional at everything.

Make Friends With The Monster

We all possess an inherent duality. Our strengths can be weaknesses and vice versa. That voice telling you that you are stagnating..is just your ambition dressed in anxiety’s clothes. Quit fighting it and worrying about it and focus on channeling it instead.

Screw Optimisation

Instead, create a “Minimum Viable Day” – Define the 2-3 small actions that, if completed, mean you’re still moving forward regardless of how you feel. Progress doesn’t require perfection.

All of these can serve as viable starting points to help you reframe and re-calibrate.
