High-performers are notoriously critical of themselves. Your inner voice may sound very demanding, “you need to do more” and demeaning “that wasn’t good enough.” This narrative may lead to pressure, shame, apathy or low confidence.
Once the negative spiral starts, it’s tough to snap out of it. To keep it short for today, here is one of the strongest self-talk strategies I know.
When you notice you’re being critical of yourself;
First, affirm the reality of the situation – “this is tough” “I’m feeling shitty” “I didn’t get the result I wanted”
Then, follow it up with a helpful, AND statement – “and I am getting better” “and I will keep going” “and I am a fighter”
Two things can be true at the same time. Continue to strengthen your self-talk for when the going gets tough. The better your internal dialogue, the better you’ll be at navigating adversities on your way to success.
